KUALA LUMPUR, 25 AUGUST 2008 – Scope International, a wholly-owned subsidiary ofStandard Chartered Plc., United Kingdom, organized a 5-km Mass Walk today to raiseRM80,000 to benefit children living with HIV/AIDS and other underprivileged groups.
More than 900 participants comprising staff, family and friends of Scope International andStandard Chartered Bank Malaysia; and members of the public turned up in full force atPadang Merbok, the Start and End-point for the Walk. Huge colourful canopies, food,handicraft and amusement stalls, as well as live performances by both local artistes andStandard Chartered staff entertained the crowd.
“In recent years, we are seeing more community, youth and grassroots support for theunderprivileged. This is a welcome development which shows an increase in civicconsciousness in society,” said Datuk Hj. Salleh bin Yusup, Director General of DewanBandaraya Kuala Lumpur (DBKL), before he flagged off the enthusiastic crowd.
“I am pleased that Standard Chartered, an international financial group, has at heart thewelfare of underprivileged persons in Malaysia, especially young children living withHIV/AIDS.” Arif Siddiqui, Chief Information Officer Malaysia and Director of Scope International said,“This year marks the fourth year we have been raising funds through our annual charitywalk. We are proud to get tremendous support from our employees – the number ofparticipants has risen from 400 last year to more than 900 this year. This proves thedetermination of Standard Chartered staff to show that anybody, especially the corporatesector, can do more for HIV/AIDS victims in this country.”
The funds raised from the 2007 event were used to purchase a Toyota van for RumahWake, one of two homes for HIV/AIDS infected and affected single mothers and childrensupported by Standard Chartered Bank under its ‘Living with HIV/AIDS’ Programme. Since2005, Standard Chartered Bank Malaysia has contributed over RM36,000 annually to eachof the homes for rental and provision.
