KUALA LUMPUR, 6 NOVEMBER 2008 – Staff of Scope International, a wholly owned subsidiary of Standard Chartered Plc., United Kingdom, and Majlis Perbandaran Sepang jointly organized a beach clean-up of Bagan Lalang recently. Scope International is the first corporate sector partner of the Council in the environment project.
As part of the project, Scope International staff spent the day clearing the beach of debris and litter and repainted the public gazebos along the beach. Trees were also planted at several locations on the sandy stretch to initiate the re-greening of the area.
“Standard Chartered is deeply committed to environmental protection across the globe. We create opportunities to help our employees, customers and other stakeholders understand the importance of the environment and climate change and what they can do to make a difference,” said Goh See Wee, Head of the International Software Centre Malaysia (ISCM). “The Bagan Lalang project is one of our many environmental community projects. At work, we are determined to lower carbon emissions and have succeeded in slashing paper usage by as much as 80% as well as reduce energy and water consumption.”
Tuan Haji Ramlan bin Sajadi, the Sepang Municipal Councilor, shared what it means to be “Green”. He said, “Going Green” must first happen internally within one’s heart and mind. When that change happens, the individual will develop a love for nature and look at protecting the environment in a holistic manner – making lifestyle changes as well as taking external action to “green” the world he lives in.” He added that Majlis Perbandaran Sepang aspires to help nurture environmental awareness among all Malaysians, especially those who frequent the Bagan Lalang beach.
