Kuala Lumpur, Saturday 19 May 2007 – The annual Charity Run & Carnival by Standard Chartered Malaysia returns with over 600 runners and a pledge from its employees to contribute the proceeds towards the Bank’s ‘Living with HIV/AIDS’ fund. The ‘FunD Run’, organised by Standard Chartered’s Global Shared Service Centre (GSSC) staff, aims to raise RM100,000 to benefit children living with HIV/AIDS.
The FunD Run covers a 5km route within the Technology Park Malaysia where GSSC is situated. GSSC is a wholly owned subsidiary of Standard Chartered Bank Malaysia which provides IT support and processing services to the Bank’s operations in over 20 countries.
The beneficiary this year is Rumah Wake; one of two homes for HIV/AIDS infected and affected single mothers and children supported by Standard Chartered Bank under its ‘Living with HIV/AIDS’ Programme. Since 2005, Standard Chartered Bank Malaysia has contributed over RM36,000 annually to each of the homes for rental and provision.
Edwin Nevis, Chief Information Officer Malaysia and Head Global Shared Service Centre (GSSC) said,
“This year marks the third year we have been raising funds through the charity run and carnival which form parts of the Bank’s corporate responsibility programme called ‘Living With HIV/AIDS’. This event has grown from strength to strength and we want to build on this charity run and carnival as one of the major fundraising efforts by the Bank’s staff.
“Following its success last year where we collected over RM40,000, we are confident to reach the RM100,000 target set this year. This is extremely encouraging considering that our employees are going the extra mile to help children living with HIV/AIDS.
“Standard Chartered strongly believes in contributing to the community and society where we operate because corporate responsibility is a part of Standard Chartered culture. The Bank believes that while it is important to do business, plan growth and build market share, it is also important to uphold humanitarian values to help the needy.
“At GSSC, we strive to make a positive difference and continue to serve the needs and concerns of the community. Our main goal from this charity run is to fulfill the wish-list of Rumah Wake to purchase its own van. This will improve the residents quality of life as the home now depends greatly on public transportation when sending the children to schools and hospitals.
“The Bank is proud to get tremendous support from its 4,000 employees in Malaysia who demonstrated true qualities of responsible corporate citizenship in helping the community. The number of staff running has also increased by 500% from 100 in 2006 to more than 600 participants this year. The Bank’s staff are determined to show that anybody can play a role in getting society and especially the corporate sector to do more for HIV/AIDS victims in this country.
“This is a clear commitment by the Bank and its staff in helping the communities in which we operate in - we will contribute towards the wellbeing of Malaysians just as we will continue to invest into our business in this country.
