On 12 December 2009, more than 150 Go Green volunteers from GSSC Malaysia and Standard Chartered Bank Malaysia and their family & friends toiled for 8 hours at the National Zoo to make 25,000 Effective Micro-organism (EM) mud balls. Developed by Japanese horticulturist Teruo Higa, ‘Effective Micro-organisms’(EM) are a potent combination of different types of micro-organisms which can positively affect decomposing material derived from the settling of organic matter such as leaves, algae, pollen, seeds etc. Besides being used in agriculture, animal husbandry, compost and waste management, EM has been found effective in improving the water quality of rivers and lakes.

To help to save Mother Earth, ISCM’s Go Green team launched a 10-day campaign to create awareness on the harmful effects of Styrofoam, commonly used by food vendors to pack food. Styrofoam releases the toxin called “Styrene”, a petroleum by-product classified as a possible cancer-causing agent by the World Health Organization (WHO). It may also cause genetic changes to developing foetus in pregnant women.

On 20 Oct 2009, the GSSC KL Go Green team visited Zoo Negara, Malaysia’s national zoo, at the invitation of its Director, Dr Mohamad Ngah. The objective of the visit was to consider the rehabilitation of the Zoo’s lake. The mission is to create a healthier, cleaner sustainable environment in and around the lake – providing a pleasant visit for the hundreds of visitors (both human and animal, especially the myriad species of birds) that frequent it daily.

Malaysian rivers today provide clean water for the 25 million people currently living in Malaysia. Among the river basins, 30 of them are reservoirs and they supply 97% of the water supply throughout Malaysia. Despite the importance of rivers as our main source of drinking water, many of our urban rivers today are heavily polluted with all sorts of chemicals and rubbish due to unsustainable development and improper management of rivers.

GSSC KLub organized their first foreign outing for GSSC KL staff. A total of 36 staff participated in the 3 day- 2 night Mount Merapi expedition, that started on 25 June 2009. Mount Merapi, ‘Gunung’ Merapi in Indonesian, is a conical volcano located on the border of Central Java and Yogyakarta, Indonesia. Its name means the ‘Mountain of Fire’.

Every year from April to August, the people of Terengganu can see hundreds of flickering lights from fishing boats at night. The lights signal that Squid Jigging Season is here! Squid jigging has now become an important eco-tourism activity. In late April, a group of 90 GSSC KL staff took part in the National Squid Jigging competition organized by the state of Terengganu, which saw the participation of up to 600 people from various organizations. The Squid Jigging event was flagged of by Dato Zaabar, Terengganu Minister of Tourism.

On Earth Day on April 22 2009, the GSSC KL Go Green team held a “Buy Nothing Day” for internal staff – a novel concept of “giving & receiving” to promote the 3Rs: Reuse, Recycle and Reduce, by getting everyone to bring things they no longer need but may be useful someone else - to be taken for absolutely free. Why trash when another can treasure? Books, gadgets, magazines, tools were popular items. Uncollected items were donated to old folk’s homes. The idea is to build awareness that selfless thoughtful acts of giving and caring can start in small steps and changes in mindset, and hopefully enough steps and changes can be taken by more people to make a difference.

ITSC East and the Business Contact Centre (BCC) in Technology Park Malaysia and Menara LYL turned off all the lights for 1 hour between 17:00 to 18:00 MYT on 27th March 2009. Jim Carey, GSSC KL’s Environment Manco Champion led the switching off of lights on the 3rd, 4th and 5th floors at Technology Park Malaysia. Simultaneously, BCC managers switched off the lights at Menara LYL. For an entire hour, ITSC and BCC staff worked in the dark
